‘PATS RALLY PAST ‘FISH IN TEN
The Bridgeport Bluefish were hit hard late by the Somerset Patriots and dropped the first game of the series 7-5 in ten innings. Despite jumping out to a three run lead in the seventh the ‘Pats battled back late to take the win.
The game got off to a slow start as the pitching from both sides dominated early. It was not until the seventh inning when Jay Caligiuri knocked in Jesse Hoorelbeke to start things off. The ‘Fish kept the pressure on as Marcos Sanchez and Sandy Aracena hit back-to-back doubles bringing home Caligiuri and Sanchez.
Somerset was not phased and came back quick in the eighth. Elliott Ayala scored off Teuris Olivares’ triple drilled to left center field. The next batter was walked, but Mike Lockwood’s single brought Teuris Olivares roaring home. At the end of the inning Jason Romano tied up the game after an infield error.
Extra innings were in store as neither team could put something together in the ninth. Somerset turned up the heat after Josh Pressley and Travis Anderson were walked back-to-back. Bryan Goelz came up at bat and drilled a base hit to right field sending Pressley and Romano home advancing the score 5-3 Somerset. Patrick Boran and Elliott Ayala rounded out the inning with consecutive base hits adding two more runs to the board.
The ‘Fish threatened the ‘Pats as Quinton McCracken and Nick Ortiz were walked back-to-back to start off the inning. After a Junior Spivey fly out, Hoorelbeke smacked a single to score the first run of the inning. Bobby Malek then legged out fielders’ choice, narrowly escaping a double play to end the inning and scored Ortiz. That is where the threat ended however as no more runs would score.
Somerset Patriot Paul Thorp (1-1) picked up the win and Bluefish Eddy Ramos (2-3) recorded the loss.
The Bluefish will be at the Ballpark for two more nights to finish out the home-stand. Tomorrow the ‘Fish will play the Patriots again at 2:05 P.M. Sunday will be Family Day at the Ballpark and on Monday the ‘Fish will close out the series against the Somerset Patriots at 7:05 P.M.
