BEARS WIN NORTH DIVISION FIRST HALF, EARN FIRST PLAYOFF BERTH SINCE 2002

NEWARK, NJ – July 8, 2007 – Catcher John Pachot and third baseman Corey Smith each hit solo home runs for the Bears, however it was not enough as they lost to the Long Island Ducks 9-5 Sunday afternoon at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium. Despite the loss, the Bridgeport Bluefish were defeated by the York Revolution, earning the Bears their first playoff berth since 2002.

For the Ducks, left-fielder Ray Naverette finished the game 3-for-5 including a solo home run, and an RBI single, while third baseman Bryant Nelson, and right-fielder Kevin Haverbusch each has two-run home runs.

With the Bears trailing 8-2 entering the bottom of the seventh inning, left-fielder Victor Gutierrez, and shortstop Donaldo Mendez each an RBI singles, and Smith hit his sixth home run of the season in the bottom of the eighth to cut the lead to 8-5. Smith ended the day 1-for-4 with a home run, while Mendez ended 2-for-4 with an RBI.

Travis Phelps (0-2) took the loss allowing eight runs on eight hits in four innings pitched, while John Riedling (6-3) earned the victory surrendering only two runs on four hits in four innings. Pompton Lakes native Matt Kimbell allowed one unearned run on one hit striking out one in his first ever professional inning of work.

Following the All-Star game in Lancaster, PA on Wednesday evening, the Bears will begin the second half of the season Friday evening against the Bridgeport Bluefish with first pitch 7:05 PM. Gates open at 6:05 PM to New Year’s Night featuring a post-game fireworks spectacular. Celebrate the team’s first home game of the second half New Year’s style.
