BEARS TOP BLUEFISH WITH 11-4 VICTORY
NEWARK, NJ – July 18, 2007 – The Newark Bears took their fourth series against the Bridgeport Bluefish by winning the final two games including Wednesday afternoon 11-4 at the Ballpark at Harbor Yard, following a delayed start of two and a half hours. The 11 runs marked the seventh time this season the Bears have scored ten or more in a single game.
Trailing the Bluefish 4-3 entering the seventh inning, third baseman Pat Peavey hit a two-run home run to give the Bears a 5-4 lead. Right-fielder Keith Reed hit an RBI double and shortstop Vic Gutierrez scored on a passed ball giving the Bears a 7-4 advantage. For Peavey it was his second home run of the game, previously hitting a solo home run in the top of the third inning.
The scored remained 7-4 until the top of the ninth when the Bears added four more runs led by a two-run home run by Reed for his 11th of the season.
Peavey ended the game 3-for-4 including his second and third home runs of the season, a double, three RBI, and three runs scored, while Gutierrez finished with two singles, a double, two RBI, and three runs scored. First baseman Jesse Hoorelbeke led the Bluefish offense going 2-for 3 with a walk and a solo home run in the bottom of the third inning for his 16th of the season.
Carlos Mirabal (7-4) earned the victory for the Bears allowing four runs on eight hits in 6.1 innings pitched, while Matt Beech (8-5) took the loss surrendering seven runs, five earned, in 6.2 innings pitched. Justin Huisman picked up his fourth save of the season retiring the final eight straight batters he faced.
The Bears and Bluefish will complete the home and home series with a three-game series at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium with first pitch scheduled for 5:05 PM. Bobby Brownlie (7-4) will take the mound for the Bears. Gates open at 4:05 PM to Business Person Thursdays. Enjoy a meal and a baseball game at The Den for one low price.
