BEARS SCORE FIVE IN SECOND, HOLD ON TO DEFEAT DUCKS
NEWARK, NJ – July 7, 2007 – The Newark Bears sent nine men to the plate scoring five runs on six hits in the bottom of the second inning to defeat the Long Island Ducks 5-4 Saturday evening at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium.
Third baseman Corey Smith, designated hitter Joey Gomes, and catcher John Pachot each hit RBI singles and center-fielder Marcus Nettles capped the scoring with a two-run triple to give Newark an early 5-0 advantage in the second inning.
With the Bears ahead 5-1 in the top of the fifth inning, Ducks center-fielder Norm Hutchins, catcher Jamie Pogue, and left-fielder Ray Navarette each hit RBI singles to cut the Bears lead to 5-4. Pogue ended the game 2-for-3 with a single, double, two RBI.
Offensively for the Bears, Nettles finished the game 1-for-3 with two RBI, and Colina went 2-for-3 with a run scored.
Gary Knotts (5-5) earned the win allowing four runs on six hits in eight innings pitched, while John Halama (4-5) took the loss surrendering five runs on seven hits in six innings pitched. Justin Huisman picked up his third save of the season throwing a perfect ninth inning with one strikeout.
The Bears and Ducks will play the final game of the first half Sunday afternoon at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium with first pitch scheduled for 3:05 PM. Travis Phelps (0-1) will take the hill for the Bears against John Riedling (5-3) for the Ducks. Gates open at 2:05 PM to Harry Potter Day featuring a baseball card set giveaway (first 1,500 fans). Celebrate the release of the final book in the Harry Potter series as well as the theatrical release of “Harry Potter and the Order of Phoenix.” Fans dressed as their favorite Harry Potter character will receive FREE admission at the box office; all fans in attendance will have the opportunity to win FREE passes to see the movie, in theatres July 13. It is also Family Fun Day Sunday featuring a pre-game autograph and post-game kids run the bases.
