BEARS LOSE BATTLE TO PATRIOTS 13-7
NEWARK, NJ – July 15, 2007 – The Newark Bears were unable to avoid a sweep as they lost to the Somerset Patriots 13-7 Sunday afternoon in front of 3,003 fans at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium.
After falling behind 5-0 in the first two innings, Bears right-fielder Joe Jiannetti hit a two-run double to in the bottom of the second, left-fielder Joey Gomes hit his fifth home run of the season in the bottom of the third, catcher John Pachot hit a sacrifice-fly in the bottom of the fourth, and third baseman Corey Smith hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the fifth to give Newark the 7-5 advantage.
The Patriots began their own comeback in the top of the sixth inning when catcher Travis Anderson hit an RBI single, and right-fielder Jason Belcher hit a two-run single in the top of the seventh giving Somerset an 8-7 lead. Pinch hitter Elliot Ayala added to the lead with a three-run home run, his second of the season, in the top of the eighth, and second baseman Danny Garcia would score a run and drive another to complete the scoring.
For the Bears Gomes finished the game 2-for-4 with two runs scored and one RBI while Smith also added two hits with two runs scored and three RBI. Shortstop Teuris Olivares led the Patriots ending the game 4-for-6 including a run scoring double in the top of the second, and a run scored.
Justin Huisman (1-1) took the loss after allowing two runs on two hits and two strikeouts in 1.1 innings of relief. Reliever Saul Solveson (3-0) earned the victory tossing two scoreless innings surrendering only one hit. Bears starter and Pompton Lakes native Matt Kimbell struck out four batters in four innings allowing five runs on seven hits. Despite the rocky start, Kimbell pitched scoreless third and fourth innings before coming out of the game.
The Bears will travel to Bridgeport to take on the Bridgeport Bluefish beginning Monday evening at 7:05 PM. Bears All-Star pitcher Gary Knotts (5-5) will make his first start in the second half of the season.
