NEWARK, NJJuly 24, 2007 – The first half North Division champion Newark Bears Professional Baseball Club announced the Cleveland Indians have purchased the contract of right-handed pitcher Bobby Brownlie.  The former Edison High School and Rutgers University standout will report to their double-A affiliate the Akron Aeros.

This season with the Bears, Brownlie posted an 8-4 record with a 3.41 ERA in 14 starts.  In 89.2 innings pitched, he struck out 79 batters and walked only 26.  Currently, Brownlie ranks first in the Atlantic League in strikeouts, third in ERA, and tied for fourth in wins.  The 26-year-old threw one shutout inning while being named the starting pitcher for the North Division in the 2007 AL All-Star Game.

“Bobby has not only been a tremendous pitcher for the Bears this season, but he has also been a terrific representative of the team to our fans,” said Bears Assistant General Manager of Baseball Operations Jim Cerny.  ”We wish Bobby nothing bus success as he moves forward in his pursuit of reaching the Major Leagues”

Originally drafted in the first round, 21st overall, in the 2002 draft by the Chicago Cubs, Brownlie began his professional career with Daytona of the Florida State League making 13 starts posting a 5-4 record, striking out 59 batters in 66 innings of work.  He finished that season first in the league with one shutout.  With West Tennessee of the Southern League in 2004, he set career highs with 26 games started, nine wins, 147.1 innings pitched, and 114 strikeouts.  The Monroe, NJ resident finished first in the league with two complete games and fifth with a 3.36 ERA.

While pitching for Rutgers University in 2000, he led the Scarlet Knights with 15 starts and 89 strikeouts, and is currently ranked in the top three in four career categories including first with seven career shutouts and 235 career strikeouts, second in complete games with eight, and third in innings pitched with 265.1.
