BARNSTORMERS WIN MARATHON 19-9
NEWARK, NJ – July 28, 2007 – The Lancaster Barnstormers defeated the Newark Bears 19-9 Saturday evening at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium.
The Bears jumped out to an early 4-2 lead in the bottom of the first inning when designated hitter Ramon Castro and second baseman Javier Colina each hit RBI singles, and first baseman Victor Rodriguez connected for an RBI double. Colina would come around to score on a wild pitch to give Newark the fourth run.
The Barnstormers scored four runs of their own in the top of the fourth inning when shortstop Danny Gonzalez hit an RBI single, center-fielder Jutt Hileman hit a sacrifice-fly, and left-fielder Dominick Ambrosini hit a two-run home run for his 12th of the season.
For the Bears, shortstop Donaldo Mendez went 2-for-4 with a single, solo home run in the bottom of the sixth, his second of the season, two runs scored, and one RBI, and catcher John Pachot went 2-for-2 with a double, solo home run in the bottom of the second inning for his fifth of the season, two runs scored, and one RBI. First baseman Victor Rodriguez went 1-for-4 extending his hitting streak to 12 games.
Lancaster was led by Ambrosini who finished the night 4-for-7 with a single, double, home run, five runs scored, and four RBI, and designated hitter Jeremy Todd went 3-for-6 with a single, double, home run (15), one run scored, and six RBI.
Carlos Mirabal (8-5) took the loss allowing nine runs on nine hits in four innings pitched, while Gustavo Martinez (5-7) received the victory surrendering eight runs on 11 hits in five innings. Reliever Ryan Harris earned his first save of the season yielding on one run on two hits in four innings pitched.
The Bears and Barnstormers will complete the three-game series with a doubleheader Sunday afternoon at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium with first pitch scheduled for 3:05 PM. Harold Eckert (0-0) will take the mound for the Bears against left-hander Rob Henkel (4-7) for the Barnstormers in game one. Gates open at 2:05 PM for the 1937 Newark Bears Championship Celebration featuring a replica hat giveaway to the first 1,500 fans presented by Haberman Building Corporation. All fans who wear Bears replica or throwback apparel will receive FREE admission. During the game, fans will have the opportunity to participate in a silent auction to win the commemorative game worn jerseys worn by the Bears players in Sunday’s game.
