NEWARK, NJ July 22, 2007 With two outs in the bottom of the ninth, pinch-hitter Denny Abreu hit the first pitch he saw from reliever Jason DiAngelo (1-6) for a two-run home run to give the Camden Riversharks a 5-4 victory over the Newark Bears at Campbells Field on Sunday afternoon. The loss drops the Bears to 2-8 on the season against the first half South Division champions.
The Bears, who never trailed until the Abreu blast, took a 2-0 lead in the second inning on a two-run home run by first baseman Corey Smith. In the top of the fourth, the Bears added to their lead when Smith scored on a sacrifice-fly by third baseman Joe Jiannetti.
Camden cut the deficit to 3-2 in its half of the fourth on a two RBI double by third baseman Matt DeMarco. In the sixth inning, Smith answered for the Bears with his second home run of the game and ninth of the year to push the score to 4-2. He finished the day 3-for-4 with two home runs, three RBI, and three runs scored.
The Riversharks got a run back in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI double by designated hitter L.J. Biernbaum that made the score 4-3.
Riversharks reliever Aric LeClair (2-2) got the win after pitching the final three innings. He did not allow a run, giving up just two hits and striking out three.
Bears starter Delvis Pacheco received a no-decision after going seven innings, allowing three runs on six hits and two walks, and striking out seven. DiAngelo surrendered two runs on two hits with three strikeouts in one and two-thirds innings in the loss.
The Bears and Riversharks will play game two of the three game series on Monday night at 7:05 PM. Carlos Mirabal (7-4) will take the hill for the Bears.
