RAILCATS EARN AN 11-3 WIN OVER JOLIET ON FRIDAY NIGHT

 

GARY, IN-The Gary SouhShore RailCats (5-4) jumped out to a 6-0 lead and cruised to an 11-3 win over the Joliet JackHammers (4-5) before 5,104 fans at U.S. Steel Yard on Friday night. The loss drops the JackHammers into third place in the Northern League South Division.

 

The RailCats scored one run in the first inning against Joliet starting pitcher Nick Renault (5-6). David Detienne (2-4) led off the inning with a solo home run over the left field wall. He hit his first home run of the season and gave Gary a 1-0 lead.

 

Gary scored a single run off of Renault in the third inning. Detienne hit a leadoff double and scored on a single by Jay Pecci (4-5). The RailCats took a 2-0 lead.

 

The RailCats scored four runs in the fourth inning to take a commanding 6-0 lead. Jermaine Allensworth (0-2) led off the inning with a walk and went to second base on a single by Nate Price (2-4). Mike Reese (0-3) walked to load the bases for Detienne.

 

Renault issued a free pass to Detienne to score Allenstworth and give Gary a 3-0 lead.

 

Pecci followed with a bases-clearing triple to make it 6-0 in favor of the RailCats.

 

The JackHammers scored two runs in the sixth inning to cut the RailCats lead down to four at 6-2. Anthony Monegan (2-4) reached base with a one-out single and went to second base on a single by Harris. Juan Diaz (1-4) hit a single to load the bases for Chad Ehrnsberger (3-4), who hit a two-run single to score the only two runs of the game for Joliet.

 

The RailCats responded with five runs in the seventh inning to take a commanding 11-2 lead. The game featured four pitchers used by the JackHammers.

 

Renault lasted three and one-thirds innings and yielded six runs on six hits. He walked seven and struck out one.

Monegan added an RBI triple in the ninth inning to score Kevin Sullivan (0-4) and make it 11-3.

 

Loose Gravel: The JackHammers made a roster move before the game, releasing RHP Cooper Eddy and signing RHP Michael Harmelink. Harmelink pitched in nine games with the University of Nebraska in his senior season in 2007. He went 0-1 with a 3.24 ERA. Harmelink pitched one inning on Friday and allowed four runs on one hit.

 

The JackHammers and RailCats continue their three-game series Saturday night. Raymond Jenkins (2-5, 5.19) gets the start for Joliet against Travis Kerber (1-4, 4.78) for the RailCats.
