RAILCATS USE FOUR-RUN FIRST INNING TO BEAT JACKHAMMERS 4-1

JOLIET, IL-The Gary SouthShore RailCats (3-1) scored four runs in the first inning to beat the Joliet JackHammers (1-3) by a score of 4-1 on Sunday evening before 2,707 fans at Silver Cross Field.

The RailCats took an early lead in the first inning after loading the bases against JackHammers right-handed starting pitcher Nick Renault (5-5). Eric Blakely (1-5) reached first base on a single, Jay Pecci (0-4) walked and catcher Jose Yepez (0-2) was hit by a pitch to load bases. Townsend (1-4) then hit a grand slam on a 3-2 pitch from Renault to give the RailCats a 4-0 lead.

In the bottom half of the first inning, the JackHammers cut Gary’s lead to three runs when Tim Hutting (0-3) scored on an error by RailCats third baseman Tanner Townsend. Hutting reached first base when he was hit by a pitch by RailCats starting pitcher Josh Habel (9-3). Juan Diaz (3-4) hit a single to move him to second base. Hutting scored when Chad Ehrnsberger (1-4) hit a bouncing ball that was knocked down by Townsend, who was unable to make the play at first base.

Renault pitched his way out of a tight situation in the sixth inning after Jermaine Allensworth (1-4) hit a two-out single and Mike Reese (1-1) walked. Renault induced Dale Mueller (0-4) to line out to JackHammers first baseman Juan Diaz to end the inning.

Right-hander Kyle Zaleski entered the game in the seventh inning and struck out all three batters he faced. Aaron Williams pitched a scoreless ninth inning.

Loose Gravel: In tonight’s game, Zaleski tied hiscareer-high of five strikeouts in a single game. He originally struck out five on May 22, 2005 when he played for El Paso in the Central League.

The JackHammers hit the road to play four games against the Kansas City T-Bones beginning Monday night at CommunityAmerica Ballpark. The JackHammers will start right-hander Raymond Jenkins (1-5, 5.44) on Monday night against a yet-to-be determined starter for the T-Bones. The first pitch is 7:05 and the pre-game show begins at 6:50 p.m. on AM 1340 WJOL and online at www.jackhammerbaseball.com.
