RAILCATS COME FROM BEHIND TO BEAT JACKHAMMERS 10-5

JOLIET, IL-The Joliet JackHammers (0-1) led 5-1 before giving up nine unanswered runs to lose 10-5 to the Gary SouthShore RailCats (1-0) in the first game of the Northern League second-half season for both clubs at Silver Cross Field before 5,130 fans on Thursday afternoon.

The JackHammers took a 2-0 lead in the first inning on a two-run home run by Chad Ehrnsberger (2-4). With Tim Hutting (2-3) aboard first base thanks to a one-out walk, Ehrnsberger sent a pitch by RailCats starter Jim Paduch over the opposite field for his fourth home run of the season.

The RailCats got one the board with a solo home run by Jose Yepez (4-4) in the second inning. Gary’s catcher cut the lead down to one run at 2-1.

Ehrnsberger’s second home run of the game came in the third inning and gave Joliet a 4-1. He finished with four RBIs on the day.

The JackHammers added to their lead in the sixth inning. Chris Brown (2-4) hit a one-out single and went to second base when Eric Scriven (0-2) was hit by a pitch. Cory Harris (2-5) followed with an RBI single to score Brown and make it 5-1 Joliet.

The RailCats scored two runs in the seventh inning against Brian Forystek and the JackHammers. Forystek, who allowed just one run on three hits through the first three innings, allowed three consecutive singles to start the seventh inning. Aaron Williams (2-3) came into the game and walked Dale Mueller (1-2) and Eric McNamee (0-4) to score two runs.

Forystek pitched six innings and allowed three runs on six hits to get a “no-decision.”

The RailCats followed with five runs in the eighth inning and two more in the ninth inning to earn their first victory of the second-half.

Loose Gravel: The JackHammers signed right-handed pitcher Cooper Eddy before the game. The West Des Moines, IA native started the season with the Kalamazoo Kings of the Frontier League, where he was 2-1 with a 5.74 ERA in six appearances. Eddy appeared in the game in the ninth inning on Thursday and gave up two runs on three hits.

The JackHammers and RailCats continue their four-game series Friday night at 7:05 p.m. The JackHammers will start right-handed pitcher Matt Smith (2-4, 5.22) on the mound against Gary right-hander Travis Kerber (1-2, 5.34).
