REDHAWKS KNOCK OFF JACKHAMMERS 6-3 ON MONDAY
FARGO, ND-The Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks (22-19) scored five runs over the fifth and sixth innings to beat the Joliet JackHammers (19-23) 6-3 before 3,356 fans at Newman Outdoor Field on Monday night. The RedHawks evened the five-game series with the JackHammers at 2-2.
The RedHawks made a last minute change by signing left-handed pitcher Joe Sergent before the game. Sergent did not play in 2006 but was 13-2 with the RedHawks in 2005 and started the game for Fargo-Moorhead. In the fourth inning, the JackHammers went to work against Sergent. Juan Diaz (2-4) hit a two-out double and scored when Chad Ehrnsberger (2-3) hit a two-run home run over the left field wall at Newman Outdoor Field. The JackHammers took a 2-0 lead.
Fargo-Moorhead scored two runs in the fifth inning against JackHammers starting pitcher Raymond Jenkins (0-5). Mike Just (1-2) earned a two-out walk and scored when center fielder Joe Mathis (1-4) pulled a two-run home run over the right field wall to tie the game at 2-2.
Diaz hit a line-drive solo home run over the left field wall to give the JackHammers a 3-2 lead.
The RedHawks scored four runs in the sixth inning against Jenkins and the JackHammers. Ruben Salazar (0-2) led off the inning with a walk and went to third base when JackHammers first baseman Juan Diaz overthrew second base. Diaz went to his right to field a ground ball hit by Juan Melo (0-4). The RedHawks ended up with runners at second and third base and nobody out.
Darryl Lawhorn (1-4) hit an RBI triple to score Salazar and Melo and give Fargo-Moohead a 4-3 lead.
Lawhorn scored on a wild pitch from third base to give the RedHawks a 5-3 lead. In the eighth inning, Kory Wayment (1-4) singled and proceeded to steal second and third base. Richard Austin (1-4) hit an RBI single to score Lawhorn and increase the lead to 6-3 for Fargo-Moorhead.
Loose Gravel: Diaz hit his league leading tenth home run in the sixth inning. He came into the game leading the Northern League with nine home runs.
