LONG BALL IS KEY TO AN 11-9 VICTORY IN KANSAS CITY

 

KANSAS CITY, KS-The Joliet JackHammers (2-3) got three home runs from Chad Ehrnsberger (2-5), Juan Diaz (3-4) and Derek Nicholson (2-5) to take an 11-3 lead and hold off a late charge from the Kansas City T-Bones (2-3) to win 11-9 before 5,539 fans at CommunityAmerica Ballpark on Monday night.

 

Joliet scored one run in the second inning against Kansas City starting pitcher Kenny Durost (4-3). Dennis Blackmon (1-4) singled and went to second base when Kevin Sullivan (0-4) reached base on a fielder’s choice. On the play T-Bones short stop Geoff McCallum threw wide of second base and both runners advanced one base on the error. Chris Brown (0-2) was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Anthony Monegan (2-4) grounded into a double play to score Blackmon from third base and give the JackHammers a 1-0 lead.

 

Kansas City tied the game with a single run in the third inning against Joliet right-hander Raymond Jenkins (2-5). Rob Watson (2-5) hit a one-out triple and scored when Mario Delgado (2-5) hit a single. The two clubs were tied at 1-1 after three innings.

 

The T-Bones scored two runs in the fourth inning to take a 3-1 lead. Neb Brown (1-3) started the inning by reaching first base on an error by Derrick Nicholson. Austin Easley (1-4) hit a single to move him to third base. Brown scored on a wild pitch and Easley took third base. Glendale Heights resident Patrick Arlis (3-4) singled home Easley to give the T-Bones a two-run lead.

 

The JackHammers scored four runs in the fifth inning against the T-Bones. Monegan led off the inning with a double and went to third base on a past ball. After Cory Harris (1-4)  walked and Hutting singled to load the bases, Diaz hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield to score Monegan and get the JackHammers within one run at 3-2.

 

Ehrnsberger followed with a line-drive home run over the left field wall to give Joliet a 5-3 lead.

 

Diaz and Nicholson hit solo home runs for Joliet in the seventh inning. The JackHammers took a 7-3 lead. It was Nicholson’s first game played since July 1 against Fargo-Moorhead. He missed almost two weeks of time with a bone contusion in his right hand.

 

Joliet scored four more runs in the eighth inning to seal a victory. Brown was hit by a pitch with one out in the inning. He scored on a triple by Monegan. Harris was hit by a pitch to put runners at the corners. Hutting then smacked a double to score Monegan and make it 9-3.

Diaz hit a two-run single to score Harris and Hutting and make it 11-3 in favor of the JackHammers.

 

The T-Bones scored six runs over the eighth and ninth innings to make the game close. Kansas City scored five runs in the ninth inning highlighted by a three-run home run from third baseman Neb Brown.

 

Loose Gravel: Chris Brown was hit by a pitch three times on Monday night. The three hit by pitches were the most times a JackHammer has been hit in one game in 2007.

 

The JackHammers and T-Bones play game two of their four-game series on Tuesday night. The game starts at 7:05 p.m. and radio coverage begins at 6:50 p.m. on AM 1340 WJOL and online at www.jackhammerbaseball.com.

 

Brian Forystek (0-1, 4.07) will make the start for the JackHammers. Trevor Caughey (0-3, 5.50) will take the mound for the T-Bones.
