Gary, Ind.—Willie Glen tossed allowed just four hits in a complete game performance as the Gary SouthShore RailCats snapped a three game losing streak and defeated the Joliet JackHammers 8-1 on Friday night before a crowd of 3,022 at U. S. Steel Yard. The win improved the RailCats record to 15-6 as they held onto a five game lead in the Northern League's South Division.
Glen struck out 10 and did not walk a batter. He allowed only one base runner after the third inning to improve his record to 3-0.
Gary took a 3-0 lead in the first inning. Eric McNamee led off with a single and scored on Jay Pecci's triple to right. Pecci scored on Jermaine Allensworth's sacrifice fly to make it 2-0, and Steve Haake followed with a solo home run to right-center field, his first of the year, to make it 3-0.
Joliet's Anthony Monegan hit a solo home run to left-center field in the third, his first homer of the year, to make it 3-1, and Chris Brown followed with a double to right. But Glen got Cory Harris to foul out to the first baseman to end the inning, as Glen retired 19 of the final 20 batters of the game. The only man to reach base against Glen after the third was Dennis Blackmon, who blooped a single to center off the glove of second baseman Eric McNamee leading off the eighth.
By that time, the RailCats had built a commanding lead. They scored three times in the fifth inning, keyed by Allensworth's two-run single, to take a 6-1 lead. Gary added two more in the bottom of the eighth, loading the bases with one out before Nate Price drove in a run with an infield ground out and Dale Mueller singled to right to bring in another and make it 8-1.
Glen's complete game was the first of the season for the RailCats. The club had only one during the 2006 regular season (Jason Shelley) and Glen had one in the playoffs. He also had one complete game with the RailCats in 2005.
The RailCats host the JackHammers again on Saturday night at 6:00 p.m. Josh Habel (2-3, 6.59) will pitch for Gary against Joliet's Dan Ziegler (1-0, 5.06). The first 1,500 fans will receive a free fleece blanket, sponored by Geminus Tobacco Prevention Services and the Times of Northwest Indiana.
