Vipers Rally Past T-Bones 9-5
Six-run eighth downs T-Bones
CALGARY, Alb. – Six hits and two errors fueled an eighth inning comeback for Calgary, as the Vipers beat Kansas City 9-5 for the sixth time in as many tries in 2007.
Kansas City would get on the board first, pounding out five hits and three runs off of Calgary starter Kazuaki Minami in the second inning. Calvin Pickering let off with a double followed by a single from Neb Brown. Pickering would come around to score on a fielder's choice by Austin Easley before Geoff McCallum's RBI single drove in Nelson Gord to give Kansas City a 2-0 lead. Rob Watson's RBI single a batter later capped off the T-Bones three-run inning.
Calgary responded in the bottom half of the second on Jason Colson's solo home run that brought the Vipers within two, but Kansas City would regain their three-run lead in the next inning when Brown doubled home Al Benjamin to make the score 4-1.
Kansas City starter Lavon Lewis went two innings allowing one run on two hits before Travis Schlichting came in to pitch two innings of scoreless ball, allowing one hit with one walk and three strikeouts.
Calgary would cut the T-Bones lead to one in the bottom of the fifth after scoring two runs off of Danny Core on a pair of singles by Drew Miller and Aaron McEachran, scoring Jorge Tang and Darryl Brinkly that made the score 4-3.
Kansas City cushioned its lead in the seventh after Aharon Eggleston stole second and came around to score on McCallum's third single of the game to give the T-Bones their fifth run of the game. Eggleston's stolen base makes him the T-Bones single-season stolen base leader, passing Rick Prieto who swiped 17 bases in 2004.
T-Bones took a 5-3 lead into the bottom of the eighth, but the Vipers used a pair of T-Bones errors and six hits to score six times in the eighth inning off Dan Jackson. Jackson pitched a scoreless seventh but ran into trouble in the eighth after walking the leadoff man, Mitch Evans, and allowing a double to Jason Colson. Evans scored on a throwing error by Benjamin from leftfield before the next two batters were retired. The next five batters all reached safely off Jackson, four came around to score. Matt Schweitzer came in to record the final out of the inning with the score 9-5 as it remained as the T-Bones were retired in order in the ninth.
Tom Lyons picked up the win for Calgary, pitching the final three innings allowing a run on two hits, and Dan Jackson took the loss his second of the season.
Calgary was lead by Jason Colson, who went two-for-four with a home run and a double. Mario Delgado's three-hit performance paced the T-Bones, who fell to 1-20 when trailing after eight innings.
