Washington, Pa--Designated hitter Jarrod Rine hit a homerun to right field off of Slippery Rock Sliders reliever Justin Robinson in the bottom of the seventh inning to give the Washington Wild Things a lead that they would not relinquish. The Wild Things returned home to Consol Energy Park to defeat the Sliders, 6-2. The homerun was the beginning of a four run inning by the Wild Things that sealed the Sliders fate.
The Wild Things got the scoring started in the bottom of the first inning when Sliders starter Alex McEnaney walked Wild Things catcher Mario Garza walked with the bases loaded, scoring left fielder Matt Sutton. The Sliders answered in the top of the second inning when right fielder Jason Curry scored on a passed ball. First baseman Jason Von Behren scored the second run in the inning after catcher Bernie Dennis singled to center. The RBI was Dennis' first as a Slider. The Wild Things countered in the bottom half of the fifth inning to tie the game when first baseman Nate Messer scored on a passed ball to shortstop Kyle Padgett.
The game remained tied until the seventh inning when the Wild Things busted out for four runs off of Robinson. Robinson was charged with the loss. The inning included three doubles and one single off of the Sliders right hander. The Sliders loaded the bases in the top of the ninth inning, but designated hitter Steve Georgion struck out to end the game.
Wild Things relievers Justin Mattison and Ian Heisel blanked the Sliders through five innings of work, respectively. Wild Things starter Pat Stanley pitched four innings, giving up two runs, one of them earned and struck out six Sliders batters. Sliders started picked up the no decision, going 4 1/3 innings, giving up one earned run and striking out two Wild Things batters.
Sliders newest acquisition, utility infielder Phil Butch grounded into a double play in his pinch hit appearance. The Sliders and Wild Things will go at it again Wednesday. LHP Derek Griffith will take the hill for the Sliders, while the Wild Things will start RHP Patrick Sadler. First pitch is set for 7:05.
