ROAD WARRIORS SCORE TWO IN NINTH, BEAT BEARS 5-3

 

NEWARK, NJ – June 14, 2007 – The Road Warriors received RBI base hits from right-fielder Steven Doetsch and shortstop Gabe Suarez to break a 3-3 tie and defeat the Newark Bears 5-3 in front of 5,259 fans Thursday afternoon at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium.

 

Left-fielder Jason Bryan and Doetsch hit back-to-back doubles with one out in the top of the ninth inning, and Suarez drove in Doetsch for the final run of the game.

 

Road Warriors designated hitter Omar Garcia led off the top of the second inning with double to left-center field, and Bryan followed with a two-run home run to give the Road Warriors an early 2-0 advantage.  The home run was Bryan’s fifth of the season.

 

Trailing 2-0 entering the bottom of the fourth, the Bears scored three runs with RBI base hits by first baseman Victor Rodriguez and third baseman Corey Smith.  Rodriguez put the Bears ahead 3-2 when he scored on a fielding error by Road Warriors center-fielder Travis Ezi.

 

The Road Warriors came right back in the top of the fifth inning to tie the game at three when Bryan hit an RBI single through the right-side of the infield to score third baseman David Housel.

 

For the Bears, designated hitter Jose Herrera led the way finishing the day 2-for-4 extending his hitting streak to 13 games with a single, double, and run scored.  Bryan finished the day 4-for-5 including a single, two doubles, and a home run, one run scored, and three RBI for the Road Warriors.

 

Bears reliever Jason DiAngelo (0-4) took the loss after allowing two runs on four hits in two innings pitched, while Road Warriors reliever Alberto Castillo (3-2) earned the victory throwing two scoreless innings striking out three.

 

The Bears will begin a three-game weekend series at York, and will become the first road team to play at Sovereign Bank Stadium Friday evening with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 PMCarlos Mirabal (2-2) will take the hill for the Bears.
