Gary, Ind.—The Gary SouthShore RailCats Professional Baseball Club announced today that left-handed pitcher Cole Stipovich has been signed as a free agent.  The RailCats also announced that pitcher Logan McElwain has been placed on irrevocable waivers.

The RailCats roster remains at 21 players, one below the Northern League limit.  However, in accordance with league roster regulations, if the RailCats add an additional player, the player must be classified as a Northern League "Rookie."

Stipovich completed his college career this spring at the University of San Francisco.  He enjoyed an outstanding 2006 season before struggling in 2007.  RailCats manager Greg Tagert recently oversaw a workout for Stipovich and was impressed.

Stipovich, 22, is a native of Kensington, California.  He was All-West Coast Conference Honorable Mention in 2006 at USF, going 2-1 with a 3.47 earned run average as a relief pitcher, issuing only one walk all season in 23.1 innings.  He went 2-3, 7.57 in 2007 in 30 relief appearances.  Stipovich walked only six batters in 59 innings in his two years at USF.

McElwain pitched in one game for the RailCats, tossing a scoreless inning on Sunday at Joliet.

The RailCats, with an 18-6 record, lead the South Division by seven games at the midpoint of the first half season.  They host Schaumburg tonight and Thursday (both games at 7:00 p.m.) and host Kansas City Friday (7:00 p.m.), Saturday (6:00 p.m.) and Sunday (2:00 p.m.) before going on a 15 day road trip that concludes on July 3rd.

More Info:  The Gary SouthShore RailCats are a Professional Minor League Baseball Team serving Northwest Indiana and Chicago's south suburbs.  For the last three years, they have been chosen "Best Local Spectator Sport" by Northwest Indiana Business Quarterly.  Their 96 game schedule includes 47 home games at beautiful U.
