Fargo, N.D.—Richard Austin hit a home run, scored three runs, and drove in three to lead the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks to a 14-4 victory over the Gary SouthShore RailCats on Thursday afternoon in the rubber match of a three game set in Fargo.  A capacity crowd of 4,852 saw the RedHawks score 10 runs over the fifth and sixth innings to break open a one-run game.  

 

The RailCats (22-10) maintained their nine game lead in the Northern League's South Division with 16 games to play as both Kansas City and Joliet lost.  The RailCats magic number to clinch the division was trimmed to eight.  Fargo-Moorhead improved to 17-14.

 

Fargo-Moorhead scored three times in the first inning against RailCats starting pitcher Travis Kerber (0-1), who was activated off the disabled list earlier in the day and was pitching for the first time since May 19^th.  Kerber issued back-to-back one-out walks before allowing Austin's three-run home run to left to make it 3-0.  The RedHawks scored again in the second on Joe Mathis' run-scoring double to make it 4-0.

 

The RailCats started back in the third.  Nate Price singled with one out, stole second, and went to third on an error.  Dale Mueller walked and Eric McNamee followed with a single to right to bring in Price and make it 4-1.  Mueller scored on Jay Pecci's sacrifice fly to make it 4-2.

 

In the fifth, the RailCats scored again when Eric Blakeley singled, went to third on Mueller's hit to center, and scored on Pecci's two-out single to center to make it 4-3.  But Jermaine Allensworth struck out with the tying run at third to end the threat.

 

Fargo-Moorhead roughed up RailCats rookie pitchers Joe Panozzo and Cole Stipovich in the bottom of the fifth, scoring six runs in the inning to take a commanding 10-3 lead.  Clint Johnson had an RBI double and Mathis added a two-run single to highlight the inning.

 

After Gary scored a single run in the sixth on a double by Tanner Townsend and an RBI single by Blakeley, the RedHawks came back with four more runs in the bottom of the inning off RailCats reliever David Byard to jump ahead 14-4.  Mike Just's two-run double was the key hit.

 

The RailCats will meet Schaumburg on Friday at 7:05 at Alexian Field in the start of a three game set.  Willie Glen (5-0, 3.31) will start for Gary against Schaumburg's Dan Grybash (2-1, 4.26).  The RailCats return home on July 4^th.

 

Notes:  The RailCats placed pitcher Jim Paduch on the seven day disabled list prior to Thursday's game to make room for Kerber on the roster…After Thursday's games, all three trailing teams in the South Division, Kansas City, Joliet, and Schaumburg, have identical records of 13-19.  They are all nine games back of the RailCats.
