Joliet, Ill.—Jose Yepez hit a home run and drove in two runs and Tony Cogan pitched out of a ninth inning jam to record his league-leading seventh save as the Gary SouthShore RailCats completed a three-game sweep of the Joliet JackHammers on Sunday night before a crowd of 4,438 at Silver Cross Field in Joliet. The win improved the RailCats record to a league-best 17-6 as they built their lead to six games over second place Schaumburg in the Northern League's South Division.

The RailCats put together a two-out rally for a pair of runs in the third inning to take an early lead. Jermaine Allensworth doubled with two outs and Steve Haake followed with a single to center to bring in Allensworth and make it 1-0. After Yepez singled to left, Tanner Townsend looped a single to center to bring in Haake and make it 2-0. Yepez drilled his first home run of the season in the fifth, a blast to left-center field, to make it 3-0.

Meanwhile, RailCats starting pitcher Jim Paduch cruised through the first five innings, allowing just two hits and no runs, but Joliet rallied to tie the game in the sixth. Anthony Monegan bunted for a base hit to start the rally and, after a Paduch throwing error, scored on Chris Brown's single to left. Cory Harris followed with a hit to move Brown to second, and with two outs, Chad Ehrnsberger singled to left to drive in Brown and make it 3-2. Tim Hutting followed with another hit to left, the fifth hit of the inning, to drive in Harris and tie the game.

But Gary answered with two runs in the top of the seventh to regain the lead. Eric McNamee started the rally with a hit to right. Jay Pecci squared to bunt and when third baseman Derek Nicholson charged, Pecci pulled the bat back and grounded one past Nicholson into left field for a hit to move McNamee to second. Allensworth's sacrifice moved the runners to second and third, and a wild pitch by Kyle Zaleski brought in McNamee to give the RailCats a 4-3 lead. Pecci scored on Yepez's ground out to second to make it 5-3.

Joliet scored one run in the eighth off RailCats reliever David Byard on a two-out RBI single by Ehrnsberger to make it 5-4, and Cogan entered the game to start the ninth. He allowed a lead-off single to Dennis Blackmon, and Eric Scriven's sacrifice moved Blackmon to second. Cogan fell behind Monegan 3-0 before getting a ground ball to short and Brown flied to right to end the game.

Paduch (3-0) allowed three runs on seven hits over six innings for the win. Joliet starter Raymond Jenkins (0-3) was charged with four runs over six plus innings for the loss.

The RailCats have won three straight after losing three straight in Kansas City earlier in the week and now stand 11 games over the .500 mark for the second time this season.

The RailCats return home to U. S. Steel Yard on Tuesday to open a three game set with Schaumburg. Jason Shelley (0-1, 9.74) will pitch for Gary against Schaumburg's Drew Dickinson (2-2, 3.52).

Notes: RailCats pitchers allowed just six runs in 30 innings in the series after giving up 19 runs in one game Thursday at Kansas City…RailCats relief pitchers are 10-2 with eight saves in 10 save opportunities for the year.
