Gary, Indiana—Dale Mueller collected three hits and drove in two runs and Jim Paduch tossed six strong innings as the Gary SouthShore RailCats notched their fourth consecutive victory, defeating the Edmonton Cracker-Cats 6-5 on Friday night at U. S. Steel Yard before a crowd of 3,084.

The win improved the RailCats record to 12-3 on the season. They are in first place, five games ahead of Joliet in the Northern League's South Division.

The RailCats scored four runs in the fourth inning, keyed by Mueller's two-run single to take a 4-0 lead. After Edmonton put a pair of runs on the board in the fifth, Gary answered with two in the sixth to jump ahead 6-2. Eric McNamee's run-scoring single was the key hit in the inning.

But Edmonton battled back, scoring three times in the seventh off RailCats reliever Jarod Brown. Brown issued a pair of two-out walks before Rhett Teller doubled in two runs to make it 6-4, and George Sandel singled in Teller to make it 6-5.

After Sandel's single, the game was delayed by rain for 31 minutes. David Byard replaced Brown on the mound after the rain delay and got the final out in the seventh before issuing two walks in the eighth and leaving the game with two outs and two men on.

Chad Blackwell replaced Byard and got Adam Shorsher to pop to short to end the eighth and then working a scoreless ninth to earn his first save. Blackwell issued a one-out walk in the ninth before getting Teller to ground into a game-ending double play.

Paduch (2-0) allowed only three hits and two runs over six innings with one walk and four strikeouts to earn the win. Edmonton starter Chris Kemlo (0-3) took the loss.

The RailCats and Cracker-Cats meet again on Saturday at 6:00 p.m. (CDT). Jason Shelley (0-0, 4.50) will start for Gary against Edmonton's Scott Richmond (1-0, 2.79). The first 1,500 adults will receive a free RailCats t-shirt, courtesy of U. S. Steel and the Times of Northwest Indiana.
