Joliet, Ill.—Cory Harris doubled to right-center field to drive in Chris Brown from first base to break a 4-4 tie with two outs in the seventh inning as the Joliet JackHammers edged the Gary SouthShore RailCats 5-4 to snap the RailCats four game winning streak.  The RailCats lead the JackHammers by nine games with 11 games to play in the South Division of the Northern League, leaving the RailCats' magic number to clinch the division at three.

 

Joliet's Anthony Monegan hit the first pitch from RailCats starter Willie Glen in the first inning for a home run to give Joliet a 1-0 lead, but the RailCats enjoyed a four-run third inning to jump ahead.  Jay Pecci singled with one out and after Jermaine Allensworth struck out, Steve Haake reached on an infield single.  Then Jose Yepez singled to drive in Pecci, and after Tanner Townsend walked, David Detienne's base hit to center brought in both Haake and Yepez to make it 3-1.  Nate Price then singled to left to bring in Townsend and make it 4-1.

 

Harris homered in the bottom of the third to make it 4-2, and Joliet pushed across a single run in the fifth to draw within one at 4-3.

 

Dennis Blackmon singled against Glen to start the Joliet seventh and went to second on a sacrifice.  Glen was replaced by Brad Mumma, who induced a ground out to second from Monegan for the second out as Blackmon went to third.  Mumma then bounced a breaking ball that squirted through catcher Jose Yepez as Blackmon came in to score the tying run.  Mumma walked Brown and was replaced by David Byard, who allowed Harris's tie-breaking double to give Joliet a 5-4 lead.

 

The RailCats had runners in scoring position in both the eighth and ninth innings against Joliet closer Matt Petrusek but could not get the big hit.

 

The RailCats record fell 26-11 on the season.  Joliet improved to 17-20.

 

The RailCats will meet Joliet on Wednesday at 7:05 p.m. at Silver Cross Field in the finale of the three game set.  Josh Habel (5-3, 4.42) will start for Gary against Joliet's Nick Renault (5-1, 3.31).  The RailCats return home on July 4^th.

 

Notes:  The RailCats are 5-3 on their current 14 game road trip that will move to Winnipeg for a five game series after Wednesday's game in Joliet and a travel day on Thursday.
