Gary, Ind.—The Gary SouthShore RailCats scored five runs in the fifth inning to overcome a 4-0 deficit and continue their home field domination as they defeated the Schaumburg Flyers 5-4 on Tuesday before a crowd of 4,639 at U. S. Steel Yard.  The RailCats have won seven straight home games and are 11-2 at U. S. Steel Yard in 2007.  They are 19-2 at the Steel over the last 21 regular season games dating back to 2006.

Just as he did on Sunday in Joliet, RailCats closer Tony Cogan entered the ballgame in the ninth inning to protect a one-run lead and worked out of a tough jam for the save.  Schaumburg had the tying run at second with one out before Cogan struck out Christian Snavely and got Dario Delgado to ground out to first as Cogan notched his league-leading eighth save of the season.

Schaumburg scored four runs in the second inning to take an early lead.  RailCats starting pitcher Jason Shelley walked the first three batters in the inning and later allowed a pair of two-run singles to Demetrious Heath and Snavely as Schaumburg jumped out to a 4-0 lead.

Mike Reese led off the Gary fifth with a walk, went to second on Dale Mueller's single to center, stole third, and scored when Eric McNamee grounded into a double play to make it 4-1.  Jay Pecci restarted the rally with a hit to center and Jermaine Allensworth singled to left.  Steve Haake followed with a double to center to score Pecci and make it 4-2, and Jose Yepez lined a double down the left field line to score Allensworth and Haake to tie the game.  Tanner Townsend singled to center to bring in Yepez and give the RailCats a 5-4 lead.

Shelley (1-1), who threw 69 pitches in the first two innings, left after after five, allowing five hits and four runs (three earned) with four walks and six strikeouts.   Steve Obenchain cruised through the sixth and seventh without allowing a hit, and Brad Mumma and Chad Blackwell combined for a scoreless eighth.

Cogan began the ninth by fielding a slow roller off the bat of Heath and making a poor throw to first to allow Heath to reach.  But Cogan struck out Sandy Almonte before Heath stole second.  He got Snavely looking on a 3-2 pitch and got Delgado to bounce out hard to David Detienne at first base to end the game.

The RailCats, winners of four straight, improved their overall record to 18-6 and increased their lead to seven games in the Northern League South Division.  Schaumburg fell to 11-13.

The RailCats host the Flyers in the second game of the series at U. S. Steel Yard on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m.  Willie Glen (3-0, 3.82) will pitch for Gary against Schaumburg's Ryan Harris (1-2, 7.06).

Notes:  The RailCats have played 13 one-run games among their first 24, by far the most of any Northern League team.  They are 10-3 in those games…The RailCats bullpen is a combined 10-2 with nine saves in 11 save opportunities…RailCats pitchers have posted a 2.08 ERA over the last four games after allowing 19 runs on Thursday in Kansas City…Townsend extended his hitting streak to seven straight games while Haake's hitting steak reach six games.
