Schaumburg, Ill.—Steve Haake collected three hits and drove in three runs and Jose Yepez delivered a key three-run double to break a 5-5 tie in the fifth inning as the Gary SouthShore RailCats defeated the Schaumburg Flyers 9-5 before a crowd of 3,951 at Alexian Field on Friday.  The win improved the RailCats record to 23-10 and kept them nine games in front of Joliet with 15 games to play in the first half race.  The RailCats' magic number to clinch the division was trimmed to seven.

Gary jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first inning, taking advantage of a Schaumburg error and a pair of infield hits by Eric McNamee and Jermaine Allensworth to set the stage for Haake's two-run double down the left field line.  Haake later stole third and scored on the same play as catcher Josh Noviskey's throw sailed into left field.

But Schaumburg battled back, scoring two runs in the bottom of the first and then three more in the third to take a 5-4 lead against RailCats starter Willie Glen.  Pat O'Sullivan hit a two-run home run to tie the game and Billy Malone's bloop double gave the Flyers their first lead of the night.

But the RailCats enjoyed a big inning against Schaumburg starter Dan Grybash (2-2) in the fifth.  McNamee and Jay Pecci each drew walks to start the inning and Allensworth was safe on a bunt single to load the bases with no one out.  Haake lined a single to right to tie the game and Yepez followed with a double down the right field line that cleared the bases and gave Gary an 8-5 lead.  The RailCats added another run in the eighth when Nate Price doubled, stole third, and scored on McNamee's infield hit to make it 9-5.

Glen (6-0) struggled but lasted five innings to pick up the win, allowing 10 hits and five runs while walking one and striking out six.

McNamee collected three hits and drove in two runs as part of a 12 hit RailCats attack.

The RailCats bullpen bounced back after a tough two days in Fargo.  Brad Mumma, Chad Blackwell, and Tony Cogan combined for four scoreless innings, allowing just one hit.

The RailCats will meet Schaumburg on Saturday at 6:20 at Alexian Field in the second game of a three game set.  Josh Habel (4-3, 4.66) will start for Gary against Schaumburg's Drew Dickinson (3-3, 3.79).  The RailCats return home on July 4th.

Notes:  The RailCats' nine runs were their highest total since June 3rd.  They had scored more than five runs in just one of their previous 11…Glen raised his career record with the RailCats to 26-8.
