GOMES RBI IN FIFTH STOPS BEARS SKID

 

NEWARK, NJ – June 12, 2007 – With the score tied at two in the bottom of the fifth inning, Newark Bears left-fielder Joey Gomes hit an RBI single to plate third baseman Joe Jiannetti to give the Bears a lead and a 3-2 victory over the Road Warriors in game two of a doubleheader Tuesday evening at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium.  With the win, the Bears snap their eight-game losing streak.

 

With the score tied at two entering the bottom of the fifth, Jiannetti led off with a double down the leftfield line, and came around to score when Gomes took a 0-2 pitch to right field to give the Bears a 3-2 advantage. 

 

Bears right-fielder Jose Herrera gave the Bears an early 1-0 lead with an RBI double in the bottom of the first inning scoring center-fielder Keith Reed, and doubled the Bears lead in the bottom of the fourth inning with a sacrifice-fly driving in second baseman Javier Colina, who led off the inning with a triple to centerfield.

 

The Road Warriors tied the game at two in the top of the fifth inning when right-fielder Steven Doetsch hit an RBI triple, followed by an RBI single by shortstop Jorge Mejia.

 

Offensively, the Bears were led by Herrera who went 1-for-2 with a double, sacrifice fly and two RBI, and Colina who finished the day 2-for-3 with a single, triple, and an RBI.  For the Road Warriors Doetsch went 1-for-3 including a triple, run scored, and an RBI.

 

Delvis Pacheco (2-1) earned the victory after allowing two runs on five hits in six innings, while Road Warriors reliever Alberto Castillo (2-2) took the loss tossing one inning surrendering one run on two hits.  Jason DiAngelo picked up his sixth save of the season for Bears.

 

The Bears and Road Warriors will continue the four-game series with game three Wednesday evening at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 PM.  Left-hander Jeriome Robertson (1-1) will make his third start of the season against former Bears Carlos Castillo (2-3) for the Road Warriors.  Gates will open at 6:05 PM to Wear it! Win it! Wednesdays.  All fans who wear Bears apparel to the box office will receive $1 off their box seat.  If the Bears win, everyone in attendance may redeem their ticket for a FREE ticket to another 2007 Bears home game.
