FORMER MAJOR LEAGUERS HOMER PAST BEARS
NEWARK, NJ – June 25, 2007 – Long Island Ducks shortstop Edgardo Alfonso, second baseman Jose Offerman, and first baseman P.J. Rose each hit two-run home runs to defeat the Bears 6-1 Monday evening at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium. Despite taking the loss, Bears starter Carlos Mirabal (4-3) allowed only three earned runs on eight hits in eight innings pitched.
Following Alfonso’s fourth home run of the season in the top of the third inning, Bears left-fielder Joey Gomes belted his fourth home run of the season in the bottom half to cut the Ducks lead to 2-1, however Offerman hit his fourth home run of the season in the top of the sixth and Rose hit his fifth of the season in the top of the ninth to give the Ducks the 6-1 advantage.
Gomes led the Bears offense going 1-for-3 with a home run, while catcher John Pachot finished with two singles. Alfonso finished the day 2-for-5 with a home run, single, two runs scored, and two RBI, and Rose ended the night 3-for-5 with a home run and two singles.
Ducks starter Lance Davis (2-0) lasted seven innings allowing one run on four hits while striking out eight to earn the victory.
The Bears and Ducks will complete the three-game series Tuesday evening at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium with first pitch scheduled for 5:05 PM. Matt Sweeney (5-3) will take the hill for the Bears against James Garcia (4-2) for the Ducks. Gates open at 4:05 PM to Two for Tuesdays at The Den.
