Fargo, N.D.—Kory Wayment collected four hits and drove in two runs and Darryl Lawhorn hit a two-run home run to lead the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks to an 9-3 victory over the Gary SouthShore RailCats on Wednesday before a crowd of 4,071 at Newman Outdoor Field.  The loss dropped the RailCats to 22-9 on the year.  Despite losing, the RailCats maintained their nine game lead in the Northern League's South Division with 17 games to play.  Their magic number to clinch the division was trimmed to nine.  Fargo-Moorhead improved to 16-14 and remained one and one-half games out of first in the North Division.

 

Each team scored one run in the first inning and it remained a 1-1 game until Fargo-Moorhead scored three times in the fifth against RailCats starting pitcher Jim Paduch (3-2).  Paduch issued three walks in the inning as Wayment's run-scoring double keyed the rally.

 

The RailCats answered with two runs in the top of the sixth but let a golden opportunity to take control of the game slip by.  Jermaine Allensworth and Steve Haake each singled to start the inning and Jose Yepez walked to load the bases.  Tanner Townsend then walked to force in a run to make it 4-2.  But RedHawks reliever Brandon Harmsen struck out David Detienne and got pinch hitter Nate Price to pop to short for the second out.  Dale Mueller walked to force in another run and make it 4-3, but Harmsen struck out Eric McNamee with the bases loaded to end the threat.

 

In the seventh, the RailCats again threatened to tie the game.  Jay Pecci singled and went to second on a sacrifice by Allensworth, but reliever Adam Rowe struck out Steve Haake and Jose Yepez consecutively to end the threat.  Over the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings, RailCats hitters struck out five times with the tying or go-ahead runner in scoring position.

 

Fargo-Moorhead scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh against RailCats relievers Cole Stipovich and Brad Mumma to take a commanding 8-3 lead.  Lawhorn's two-run home run off Mumma capped the rally.  It was Lawhorn's seventh home run of the year.  The RedHawks added a single run against Mumma in the eighth to close out the scoring.

 

The RailCats will meet Fargo-Moorhead again Thursday at 12:30 p.m. in the rubber match of the three game set.  Travis Kerber (0-0, 6.00), who has been on the disabled list with a shoulder problem since the third day of the season, will start for Gary against F-M's Gerrit Simpson (0-3, 5.30).  The RailCats return home on July 4^th.

 

Notes:  Reliever Joe Panozzo made his professional debut for Gary by pitching a perfect sixth inning.  Panozzo was signed earlier Wednesday after an outstanding 2007 season at St. Joseph's (Ind.) College…RailCats relievers allowed five runs in three innings of work after giving up only two runs in the previous 10 games covering 29 innings.
