BEARS WIN IN RAIN-SHORTENED GAME 6-3
NEWARK, NJ – June 27, 2007 – The Newark Bears defeated the York Revolution in a rain-shortened seven inning game 6-3 Wednesday evening at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium. The game marked the first ever visit to The Den for York.
In the bottom of the third inning, the Bears broke a scoreless tie when second baseman Javier Colina hit a two-out RBI double, and first baseman Victor Rodriguez hit a two-run home run for his sixth of the season.
The Bears added runs in the bottom of the fourth when right-fielder Jack Headley drew a bases loaded walk, and in the bottom of the fifth when designated hitter Joey Gomes hit an RBI single to give the Bears a 5-0 advantage.
The Revolution cut the lead to 5-3 when center-fielder Peter Bergeron and designated hitter Nate Espy had RBI base hits in the top of the sixth, and shortstop Keoni De Renne hit a solo home run, his second of the season, in the top of the seventh, however Colina hit his team-leading 12th home run of the season in the bottom of the seventh inning to give Newark the 6-3 lead.
Rodriguez finished the game 3-for-4 including a single, double, and a home run, two runs scored and three RBI, while Colina went 2-for-4 with a double, home run, two runs scored, and two RBI. Bergeron ended the day 3-for-4 with three singles, one run scored, and one RBI for the Revolution.
Gary Knotts (3-5) earned the victory allowing three runs, two earned, on eight hits in 6.1 innings pitched, while striking out seven and Travis Phelps earned his second save of the season without allowing a hit in 0.2 innings. Revolution starter Steve Smyth (1-1) took the loss after surrendering five runs on eight hits in six innings pitch.
The Bears and Revolution will play game two of the three-game series Thursday afternoon at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium with first pitch scheduled for 12:05 PM. Left-handed pitcher Jeriome Robertson (2-2) will take the mound for the Bears against Byron Batson (0-0) for the Revolution. Gates open at 11:05 AM to Business Person Thursdays. Business men and women may enjoy lunch and a ballgame at the stadium for one low price.
