BEARS SWEEP ROAD WARRIORS WITH 9-8 VICTORY

 

NEWARK, NJ – June 20, 2007 – The Newark Bears came back from 1-0 and 4-1 deficits to defeat the Road Warriors 9-8 and sweep the three-game series Wednesday evening at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium.  With the win, the Bears have won seven of their last nine games to improve their record to 24-21.

 

Following a home run by third baseman David Housel, his fourth of the season, in the top of the first inning, Bears first baseman Victor Rodriguez hit a sacrifice-fly to tie the game at one in the bottom half of the inning.

 

Trailing 4-1 entering the bottom of the second inning, Bears center-fielder Keith Reed grounded out to second base plating third baseman Joe Jiannetti, and second baseman Javier Colina hit an RBI single to cut the lead to 4-3.

 

The score remained the same until the bottom of the fourth inning when left-fielder Marcus Nettles hit a two-run triple to right-centerfield and came around to score on a wild pitch to give Newark a 6-4 lead.  The Bears added three more runs to their lead in the bottom of the fifth inning when Rodriguez hit an RBI single, catcher John Pachot scored on a throwing error by relief pitcher Chris Eickhorst, and Reed hit an RBI double.

 

For the Bears, Reed had three hits to extend his hitting streak to 14 games, two run scored and two RBI, and Colina had three hits one run scored and one RBI.

 

In addition to Housel, the Road Warriors received a solo home runs by right-fielder Steven Doetsch (8) and first baseman Ian Bladergroen, a two-run home run by shortstop Jorge Mejia a two-run triple by center-fielder Travis Ezi, and an RBI single by catcher Manny Mejia.

 

Bears starter Carlos Mirabal (4-2) earned the victory after allowing five runs on ten hits while striking out five in five innings pitched.  Road Warriors starter Cody Harkcom (0-5) took the loss surrendering six runs, three earned, on seven hits in 3.1 innings pitched.  Edwin Almonte earned his third save of the season with perfect ninth inning striking out one.

 

The Bears will travel to Campbell’s Field Thursday evening to play a three game series against the Camden Riversharks with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 PMMatt Sweeney (5-3) will take the mound for the Bears.
