BEARS SWEENEY SOLD TO ASTROS, ROBERTSON REPORTS TO MEXICO; ADD PITCHERS DAVIS AND KIMBELL
NEWARK, NJ – June 30, 2007 – The Newark Bears Professional Baseball Club announced they have sold the contracts of right-handed pitcher Matt Sweeney to the Houston Astros and left-handed pitcher Jeriome Robertson to Mexico. In addition, the Bears have added right-handed pitcher Brendon Davis and right-handed pitcher Matt Kimbell.
Sweeney, who will report to the Salem Avalanche of the single-A Carolina League, appeared in ten games for the Bears posting a 5-3 record with 4.35 ERA. He struck out 33 batters in 51.2 innings pitched including four starts with six or more. During the month of May, the Yardville, NJ native was 4-1 with a 2.15 ERA in five starts. He allowed only seven earned runs in 29.1 innings pitched striking out 22 batters en route to being named the Atlantic League Co-Pitcher of the Month.
Robertson made six appearances for the Bears this season, posting a 3-2 record with a 4.54 ERA. On June 18th , Robertson has his best start of the season allowing only one earned run on seven hits while striking out three over eight innings in a 7-3 victory over the Road Warriors. On June 28th his final appearance with the Bears, the former 15-game winner with the Astros picked up a victory surrendering two earned runs on five hits in 6.1 innings pitched.
Brendon Davis joins the Bears after beginning the season with Camden Riversharks. In 13 appearances with the Riversharks, Davis has struck out 16 batters in 15.2 relief innings. In 1.2 innings against the Bears this season, the Texas native allowed only one hit without giving up a run. This season marks Davis’ fifth as a professional after signing as a non-drafted free agent in 2003 with the Astros.
Kimbell joins his first professional sports team following his four year career with the Rutgers-Newark Scarlet-Raiders. In his senior season with the Scarlet-Raiders, Kimbell appeared in 12 games, starting ten, striking out 57 batters in 55 innings. The hard-throwing 6’5” right-hander from Pompton Lakes, NJ will be in uniform tonight as the Bears begin a three-game series with the York Revolution at Sovereign Bank Stadium.
