BEARS SCORE EIGHT UNANSWERED, DEFEAT DUCKS 8-2

 

NEWARK, NJ – June 24, 2007 – The Newark Bears erased an early 2-0 deficit scoring eight runs, including six in the sixth and seventh innings, to defeat the Long Island Ducks 8-2 Sunday afternoon at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium.  With the win, the Bears improved their record to 26-23, and move with half of game of second place behind the Ducks in the North Division of the Atlantic League.

 

Third baseman Corey Smith broke a 2-2 tie in the bottom of the sixth inning with a three-run home run, his fourth home run of the season and second in as many nights.  In the bottom of the seventh inning, second baseman Javier Colina drove in center-fielder Keith Reed with a double to leftfield, and first baseman Victor Rodriguez followed with a two-run home run to give the Bears the 8-2 advantage.

 

Trailing 2-0 entering the bottom of the third inning, the Bears cut the lead in half when left-fielder Joe Jiannetti plated designated hitter Joey Gomes with an RBI groundout.  Gomes led off the inning with a triple to centerfield.  Colina tied the game at two in the bottom of the fourth inning with his team-leading 11th home run of the season.

 

Rodriguez ended the game 3-for-4 with two singles, a home run, two runs scored, and two RBI.  Colina finished the game 2-for-4 with three runs scored and two RBI.

 

Right-fielder Kevin Haverbausch led the Ducks offense going 1-for-3 with a two-run home run in the top of the second inning for his sixth home run of season.

 

Bears starter Bobby Brownlie (5-3) earned the victory allowing only two runs on eight hits in seven innings, while Donovan Osborne (2-3) took the loss surrendering eight runs on 11 hits in seven innings.

 

The Bears and Ducks will play game two of the three game series Monday evening at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 PMCarlos Mirabal (4-2) will take the mound for the Bears against Lance Davis (1-0) for the Ducks.  Gates open at 6:05 PM for Markdown Mondays featuring a 10% discount on selected food and merchandise.
