BEARS REACH 30 WINS, DEFEAT YORK 4-2

 

NEWARK, NJ – June 30, 2007 – The Newark Bears defeated the York Revolution 4-2 Saturday evening at Sovereign Bank Stadium.  With the win, the Bears have won four straight games and reached the 30 win mark in a half for the first time since the first half of the 2005 season.

 

Trailing 1-0 in the top of the second inning, second baseman Javier Colina led off with a double and came around to score on an RBI single by first baseman Victor Rodriguez.  The Bears would take a 2-1 lead in the top of the third inning when right-fielder Keith Reed singled in center-fielder Marcus Nettles.

 

After York tied the game in the bottom of the third on an RBI single by third baseman Matt Dryer, catcher John Pachot got the lead back for Newark in the top of the fourth with an RBI single.  Shortstop Donaldo Mendez gave Newark the 4-2 advantage with an RBI double in the top of the seventh.

 

Colina ended the day 2-for-4 with a walk, two doubles, and a run scored, while Rodriguez went 2-for-5 with an RBI.  Dryer led the Revolution finishing the day 2-for-3 with two RBI.

 

Carlos Mirabal (5-3) earned the victory allowing two runs on eight hits striking two in seven innings pitched, while Dave Gil (2-4) took the loss surrendering four runs on 12 hits in seven innings.  Justin Huisman picked up his first save of the season throwing two perfect innings with two strikeouts.

 

The Bears and Revolution will continue the three-game series with game two Sunday evening with first pitch scheduled for 6:05 PM.
