BEARS FIVE RUN SIXTH SWEEPS YORK

 

NEWARK, NJ – June 29, 2007 – Trailing 4-3 with two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning, Newark Bears designated hitter Joey Gomes was hit by a pitch with bases loaded, left-fielder Joe Jiannetti drew a walk, and catcher John Pachot hit a three-run triple to give Newark an 8-4 lead over the York Revolution, in which they would go on to win 10-6 in front of 4,419 fans Friday evening at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium.  With the win, the Bears swept the three game series and improved their record to 29-25.

 

The Bears took an early 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning when second baseman Javier Colina hit a two-run triple, and third baseman Corey Smith hit an RBI double, his team-leading 19th of the season.

 

The Revolution took a 4-3 lead beginning with a solo home run by third baseman Matt Dryer, his eighth of the season, in the top of the second, and finishing with an RBI single by catcher Luis Taveras and a two-run double by shortstop Rayner Bautista in the top of the fourth inning.

 

Smith finished the game 2-for-3 including a double, two-run home run (5), two runs scored, and three RBI.  Colina also added two hits with a run scored and two RBI and first baseman Victor Rodriguez ended 3-for-4 with three runs scored.  Dryer led the Revolution finishing 2-for-3 with two runs scored and one RBI.

 

Bobby Brownlie (6-3) earned the victory allowing four runs on eight hits in 6.1 innings pitched while striking out eight.  Frank Castillo (0-1) took the loss throwing a complete game (eight innings) surrendering ten runs on ten hits striking out three.  Jason DiAngelo picked up seventh save of the season throwing 2.2 innings allowing one earned run on two hits striking out one.

The Bears have completed their six-game homestand and will now begin a six-game road trip beginning with three games at Sovereign Bank Ballpark against the York Revolution Saturday evening with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 PM.  Carlos Mirabal (4-3) will make the start for the Bears against Dave Gil (2-3).
