BEARS ACQUIRE GUTIERREZ FROM YORK; SEND ARTEAGA TO ROAD WARRIORS
NEWARK, NJ – June 20, 2007 – The Newark Bears Professional Baseball Club announced they have acquired infielder Vic Gutierrez from the York Revolution in exchange for right-handed pitcher Barry Armitage. The Bears also sent infielder Josh Arteaga to the Road Warriors while retaining his rights.
Gutierrez is playing in his 12th season after he was originally signed as a non-drafted free agent by the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1994. He reached the triple-A level during the 2004 season, appearing in 22 games for Salt Lake of the Pacific Coast League. No stranger to the Atlantic League, the Pennsylvania resident has previously played for the Lehigh Valley Black Diamonds, Atlantic City Surf, and Camden Riversharks before joining the Revolution. While playing for the Riversharks in 2005, Gutierrez played in 126 games batting .307 with 23 doubles, 73 runs scored, 58 RBI, and ranked fifth in the AL with 42 stolen bases.
This season with York, Gutierrez batted appeared in 20 games batting .286 with nine runs scored. In three games against the Bears, he had five hits in 12 at-bats including two doubles, three runs scored and two RBI.
Armitage joined the Bears at the end of May and is in his eighth professional season. With the Bears, the South African native appeared in seven games out of the bullpen, allowing six earned runs in 12.1 innings pitched, while posting a 1-0 record. Arteaga appeared in 21 games this season batting .214 with three extra base hits, nine runs scored and five RBI.
