BARNSTORMERS SWEEP BEARS WITH EXTRA-INNING WIN
NEWARK, NJ – June 10, 2007 – Lancaster Barnstormers right-fielder Dominick Ambrosini hit an RBI single in the top of the tenth to defeat the Newark Bears 3-2 Sunday evening at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium. Despite the loss, Bears starter Carlos Mirabal received a no decision after tossing eight innings allowing two unearned runs on six hits while striking out three.
With bases loaded and two out in the top of the tenth inning, Ambrosini delivered an RBI single to right field scoring shortstop Danny Gonzalez to give the Barnstormers the 3-2 victory.
In the bottom of the third inning, the Bears jumped out to an early 2-0 lead with back-to-back RBI singles by right-fielder Jack Headley and third baseman Joe Jiannetti.
With the Bears ahead 2-0 in the top of the sixth inning, the Barnstormers loaded the bases with one out before left-fielder Steve Booker hit a run scoring single to cut the Bears lead in half. Mirabal got the next batter, Ambrosini, to ground into a 3-6-1 double play to end the inning with the Bears ahead 2-1.
Lancaster tied the game in the top of the eighth inning when center-fielder Quincy Foster hit a sacrifice-fly to leftfield scoring second baseman Michael Woods. Woods reached base on a two-base throwing error by Bears shortstop Josh Arteaga, and reached third on a wild pitch.
Headley led the Bears offense with three hits and run scored, while Gonzalez led the Road Warriors going 4-for-4 with an RBI.
Travis Phelps (0-1) took the loss after surrendering one run on two hits in 1.1 innings pitched. Barnstormers starter Rob Henkel (3-3) earned the victory lasting nine innings allowing two runs on 11 hits striking out five, while Eric Ackerman earned his third save of the season giving up one hit and striking out one in the tenth inning.
After a day off on Monday, the Bears will complete the ten-game homestand with a four-game series against the Road Warriors beginning with a doubleheader Tuesday evening. Gates open at 4:05 PM to Two for Tuesdays at The Den. All fans who purchase one box seat will receive a complimentary box seat at the box office. First pitch is scheduled for 5:05 PM.
