Gary, Ind.—Eric McNamee drilled a two-run triple in the seventh inning and five Gary pitchers combined to allow just three hits as the RailCats defeated the Winnipeg Goldeyes 2-1 on Opening Night on Thursday before a crowd of 3,102 at U. S. Steel Yard.

The two teams played six scoreless innings to start the game as Gary pitcher Willie Glen and Winnipeg's Glenn Bott battled pitch for pitch.

Winnipeg broke through in the top of the seventh to take the lead. Glen walked Chris Latham with one out and left the game after reaching his pitch limit. Glen left the game after six and one-third innings, allowing just two hits and no runs with one walk and nine strikeouts. Steve Edall replaced Glen and yielded a run-scoring double to Antoin Gray to break the scoreless tie.

In the Gary half of the seventh, David Detienne led off with an infield single. Mike Reese grounded to third as Detienne was forced at second. Reese stole second and went to third on a throwing error by catcher Brent Matheny. After pinch hitter Nate Price walked, McNamee drilled a 3-1 pitch over the head of center fielder Fehlandt Lentini as both Reese and Price scored to make it a 2-1 game.

David Byard pitched a perfect eighth and Tony Cogan worked a scoreless ninth, allowing only a two-out walk. Cogan earned the save. The win went to reliever Jared Brown, who faced only one batter, recording the final out of the seventh. Steve Russell took the loss, allowing both runs in one-third of an inning.

The two clubs meet again on Friday at 7:00 p.m. Josh Habel will start for Gary against Ben Moore. The first 1,500 fans will receive a free RailCats calendar, courtesy of Diversified Research and Development and the Post-Tribune. Fireworks will follow the game, sponsored by Krazy Kaplans and the Post-Tribune.
