Calgary, Alberta—The Gary SouthShore RailCats built a 7-0 lead and held off a furious comeback bid by the Calgary Vipers to take a 9-6 victory and gain a sweep of the three game set in Calgary. The RailCats improved their record to 11-3 on the season and maintained a five game lead on second place Joliet in the Northern League's South Division.
Calgary battled back after trailing by seven runs after five innings and pulled to within three heading to the bottom of the ninth. RailCats closer Tony Cogan retired the first batter of the inning before allowing a single to left to Jorge Tang. Manabu Kuramochi dropped a bunt single up the first base line and Darryl Brinkley bounced an infield hit off the glove of third baseman Tanner Townsend to load the bases with one out and put the tying run at first.
But Cogan got Nelson Castro to pop foul to the catcher and got Carlos Duncan, a .441 hitter, to ground out to short to end the game as Cogan earned his league-leading sixth save.
Nate Price led a 10 hit RailCats attack with a double, triple, run scored, and run batted in. Dave Detienne had a triple and drove in three runs while Dale Mueller had two hits and two runs batted in.
RailCats starting pitcher Josh Habel (2-2) was outstanding over the first five innings, allowing just one run on a solo home run by Brinkley, before tiring in the sixth. He allowed a two-run home run to former RailCat Jason Colson in the sixth and then allowed the first three batters to reach in the seventh being replaced by Steve Obenchain. All three runners scored, leaving Habel, the winning pitcher, with a final line of six innings, nine hits allowed and six earned runs with no walks and two strikeouts.
The RailCats return home to host Edmonton on Friday night at U. S. Steel Yard in the first game of a three game series at 7:00 p.m. Jim Paduch (1-0, 2.40) will start for Gary against Edmonton's Chris Kemlo (0-2, 6.94). Notes: The RailCats went 6-1 on their seven game Canadian road trip. The six wins match their victory total for road wins in North Division cities for the entire 2006 season…Jose Yepez had two hits to extend his hitting streak to nine straight…Price is 10 for his last 20 with a home run, four doubles, and two triples…The RailCats went 11-3 in May after going 3-10 during the month in 2006 before eventually getting to the Northern League Championship Series.
