Gary, Ind.—Jose Yepez's infield single with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning brought in David Detienne from third base with the winning run as the Gary SouthShore RailCats overcame a sloppy defensive performance to defeat the Schaumburg Flyers before a crowd of 5,214 on Wednesday afternoon at U. S. Steel Yard.
The RailCats took two of three in the series and completed their first homestand of the season with a 5-2 record. Schaumburg fell to 2-5.
Gary trailed 3-2 entering the bottom of the ninth, having committed five errors, matching their single-game high during the tenure of manager Greg Tagert from 2005-'07. Steve Haake began the ninth with a hard grounder off the glove of first baseman Keith Maxwell that was ruled an error. David Detienne's sacrifice bunt was fielded by third baseman Dario Delgado, but Delgado's poor throw to first allowed Detienne to reach safely. Tanner Townsend dropped a bunt down the third base line the pitcher Jim Morrison fielded, but Morrison's throw to third was late and the bases were loaded with no one out. Mike Reese grounded into a double play as a run scored to tie the game.
Yepez went up as a pinch hitter and hit a slow ground ball to the left side that just escaped the reach of Delgado at third. Shortstop Sandy Almonte fielded the ball deep in the hole at short, but his off-balance throw to first pulled Maxwell off the bag as Detienne scored to end the game.
Tony Cogan (1-0) pitched a scoreless top of the ninth for Gary to earn the win. Morrison (0-1) took the loss.
Eric McNamee led Gary with three hits and a walk and extended his hitting streak to seven straight games.
Four RailCats pitchers combined to allow only five hits and battled to keep the RailCats in the game despite the team's defensive lapses.
Gary's Jay Pecci hit a two-run home run in the first inning to give the RailCats a 2-0 lead. Schaumburg tied the game in the third, taking advantage of a RailCats error for one run and then getting a two-out RBI single from Maxwell for the second.
The Flyers broke the 2-2 tie with an earned run in the second, scoring the tie-breaking run on a throwing error by RailCats catcher Brett Wallace.
The RailCats will embark on a seven game Canadian road trip beginning Friday night at Edmonton. Jason Shelley (0-0, 3.00) will pitch for Gary against Edmonton's Reggie Rivard (0-1, 7.50).
