Calgary, Alberta—The Gary SouthShore RailCats scored three runs in the ninth inning and one in the 12th to defeat the Calgary Vipers 8-7 in the first game of a three game set on Tuesday. The game lasted four hours and eight minutes as the RailCats improved their record to 9-3 on the season and 4-1 on their current seven game Canadian road trip.
Mike Reese broke a 0 for 16 dry spell with a one-out single in the top of the 12th inning to drive in Dave Detienne from second base to break a 7-7 tie, and RailCats reliever Steve Obenchain pitched a perfect bottom of the 12th to close out the 'Cats biggest comeback win of the year.
Trailing 7-4 going the ninth, the RailCats started the inning with back-to-back walks from Eric McNamee and Jay Pecci. Jermaine Allensworth singled to left to drive in McNamee, but on the play, Allensworth got caught between first and second, forcing Pecci into a desperation sprint toward third, and he was tagged out. Steve Haake followed with a walk and Jose Yepez dropped a single to right. On Yepez's hit, right fielder Jorge Tang made a poor throw into second base, allowing Allensworth to score and Haake to go to third with one out. After Tanner Townsend struck out, Detienne hit a bouncer up the middle that was deflected toward the left side of the infield by pitcher David Manning as Haake raced in to score the tying run and Detienne legged out an infield single.
RailCats reliever David Byard worked three scoreless innings to keep the RailCats hopes alive before giving way to Obenchain in the 11th.
Detienne began the Gary 12th with a walk and went to second on Brett Wallace's sacrifice. Reese then hit a hard grounder through the middle that brought in Detiennce with the eventual winning run.
Obenchain (1-0) faced six batters out of the bullpen, retiring all six and notching four strikeouts for the win.
The RailCats finished with 13 hits, including three by Allensworth. Haake, Yepez, and Detienne each had two hits.
The RailCats meet Calgary again Wednesday at 8:05 p.m. (CDT). Willie Glen (2-0, 1.45) will start for Gary against Calgary's Evan Greusel (0-0, 1.17). The RailCats return home to host Edmonton on Friday night at the Steel Yard.
