Edmonton, Alberta—Tanner Townsend delivered a double and triple and drove in two runs as the Gary SouthShore RailCats came from behind to defeat the Edmonton Cracker-Cats 5-4 before an opening night crowd of 2,172 at TELUS Field in Edmonton on Friday.
The win improved the RailCats record to 6-2. Five of their six wins have been comeback victories. Edmonton fell to 3-5 on the year.
Edmonton scored twice in the first inning against RailCats starting pitcher Jason Shelley, who allowed a lead-off single and then walked three batters in the inning including one with the bases loaded. Both runs were unearned after a dropped foul pop by catcher Jose Yepez.
The RailCats tied the game in the fifth when Yepez walked and scored on Townsend's triple to right. Townsend then scored on Dave Detienne's ground out to tie the game at 2-2.
Edmonton scored twice in the sixth against RailCats reliever Jarod Brown, who walked two and hit one in the inning as the Cracker-Cats regained a two-run lead.
But the RailCats answered in the seventh. Steve Haake reached on an error and scored on Yepez's triple to center to make it 4-3. Townsend followed with a double off the fence in left to tie the game. One batter later, Townsend scored from second on an error by first baseman Kyle Nichols, who mishandled a ground ball by Gary's Nate Price, as the RailCats took their first lead.
Brad Mumma and Chad Blackwell combined to pitch scoreless baseball in the seventh and eighth innings before Tony Cogan came on for the ninth. Cogan gave up a two-out double to George Sandel but got Terrence McClain to ground back to the mound to end the game. Cogan picked up his third save. Mumma, who retired all four batters he faced, earned the win (1-0).
The RailCats will continue their seven game Canadian road trip Saturday night at Edmonton. Willie Glen (1-0, 0.73) will pitch for Gary against Edmonton's Mike Henry (0-1, 5.68). The game will begin at 8:11 (CDT).
Notes: Eric McNamee went 0 for 4 as his seven game hitting streak came to an end.
