Gary, Ind.—A pair of two-run home runs by Fehlandt Lentini and Walter Young lifted the Winnipeg Goldeyes to a 4-3 victory over the Gary SouthShore RailCats on Friday night at U. S. Steel Yard before a crowd of 3,025. The two clubs have split the first two games of the season.

Winnipeg held off a RailCats comeback bid in the bottom of the ninth inning. Goldeyes reliever Matt Davis issued three walks in the inning to load the bases with two outs, but got Jose Yepez to fly out to deep right center field to end the game with the tying and winning runs in scoring position.

Yepez drilled a two-run double in the first inning to give Gary a 2-0 lead. But Young, a 290 pound former major leaguer with the Baltimore Orioles, drilled a long home run to right center field in the top of the fourth the tie the game.

The RailCats came right back to regain the lead in the bottom of the fourth when Tanner Townsend reached on an infield single, stole second, and scored on David Detienne's two-out single up the middle to make it 3-2.

In the top of the fifth, Winnipeg's Cameron Coughlin singled with one out off RailCats starter Josh Habel (0-1), and Lentini, a key member of the 2005 RailCats Northern League Championship club, homered to left to make it 4-3.

Winnipeg starting pitcher Ben Moore struck out 10 RailCats over six innings, allowing eight hits and three runs, to earn the win.

The RailCats, who stranded 11 runners, had men in scoring position in the sixth, seventh, eighth, and ninth innings, but could not get the big hit.

Gary finished with 11 hits including two apiece by Yepez, Townsend, Detienne, and Jermaine Allensworth. Winnipeg made the most of their five hits with the pair of two-run homers.

The RailCats bullpen was a bright for manager Greg Tagert. Steve Obenchain, Jared Brown, and Chad Blackwell combined to throw four scoreless innings. Habel, the starter, was solid with the exception of the two long balls. He went five innings, allowing four hits and four earned runs with two walks and four strikeouts.

The RailCats host the Goldeyes again on Saturday in a 6:00 p.m. game at U. S. Steel Yard. Travis Kerber, in his fourth year with the RailCats, will get the starting nod. Joel Posey will pitch for Winnipeg. The first 2,000 fans receive a free RailCats magnet schedule courtesy of Bennigan's and the Times of Northwest Indiana. The series concludes at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday.
