Schaumburg, Ill. Steve Haake drilled a two-run home run and added a double and Brett Wallace connected on a solo home run as the Gary SouthShore RailCats defeated the Schaumburg Flyers 8-4 in Northern League pre-season action on Thursday afternoon. The RailCats are 1-1 on the spring season.

In the second inning, Haake followed a double by Tanner Townsend with a long home run to right field to give the RailCats a 2-0 lead. The RailCats scored on an error in the third to go ahead 3-0 before Schaumburg scored a pair of runs in the bottom half of the inning against RailCats starter Josh Habel.

Dale Mueller led off the Gary half of the fifth inning with a triple and scored on Jermaine Allensworth's ground out to make it 4-2.

After Schaumburg scored one run in the bottom of the fifth, the RailCats answered with two runs in the sixth, keyed by three straight singles by Mike Reese, Eric McNamee, and Nate Price, to make it 6-3.

In the eighth, Reese led off with a double, went to second on McNamee's single, and scored on Nate Price's ground out to make it 7-3. Wallace led off the ninth with a solo home run to close out the RailCats scoring.

McNamee, Townsend, Georgion, and Reese joined Haake with two hits each in the game for Gary as part of a 14 hit attack.

The RailCats host Schaumburg at 1:00 on Friday at U. S. Steel Yard in their first home game of the pre-season. Travis Kerber is scheduled to start for the RailCats.

Notes: Georgion had hits in his first two times at bat, giving him four consecutive base hits in the spring season. The streak ended with a grounder to the mound his third time to the plate.

Pre-game notes: The RailCats released non-roster catcher Carl Johnson after Wednesday's game. Infielder Steve Hudson played for the RailCats on Thursday on a try-out basis. He is a product of Purdue-North Central.

Top of third: Blakeley flied to center. Mueller reached on an error by Demetrius Heath, the second baseman, on a bouncing ball. Pecci grounded out to second, Mueller went to second. Allensworth reached on a dropped fly ball to right by Billy Malone, Mueller scored. Yepez grounded out to second. 1 Run, 0 Hits, 1 LOB.

Bottom of third: Habel allowed a lead-off double to Kevin House. Heath singled to right and Haake misplayed the ball for an error, allowing House to score and Heath to go to second. Heath went to third on a ground out to short and scored on a base hit by Keith Maxwell. Habel got out of the inning on a pair of line outs.

Top of fourth: Townsend flied out to right. Haake lined out to first on a nice play. Georgion blooped a single to left. Georgion stole second. Reese walked. Blakeley grounded out to third. 0 Runs, 1 Hit, 2 LOB.

Bottom of fourth: Tony Cogan now pitching for Gary. Steve Hudson now playing shortstop. Cogan walked the lead-off batter but then got a 5-4-3 double play that was nicely turned by Townsend, Blakeley, and Georgion. Malone then lined a single to center and stole second before Cogan got a strikeout to end the inning.

Top of fifth: Mueller led off with a line drive triple to the right field corner. Pecci, back in the game for an at bat, bounced back to the pitcher. Allensworth grounded to short as Mueller scored. Yepez lined a single to center. Townsend grounded a single to left. Sasa running at first for Townsend. Haake popped foul to the catcher. 1 Run, 3 Hits, 2 LOB.

Bottom fifth: McNamee now playing second. Sasa playing third. Brett Wallace catching. Cogan gave up a one-out single followed by a walk. Wallace gunned down the lead runner trying to steal third. Cogan then allowed a single to left to put runners at first and second with two outs before Christian Snavely delivered a lopping single to center to drive in a run. Cogan got a foul to third to end the inning.

Top of sixth: Georgion hit by pitch. Reese lined a single to left, Georgion to second. McNamee blooped a single to center to load the bases. Price blooped a singled to center to drive in a run. Hudson struck out looking. Bernard Caston batting for Allensworth. Caston grounded out to second, Reese scored. Wallace popped out to third. 2 Runs, 3 Hits, 2 LOB.

Bottom of sixth: Jared Brown now pitching for Gary. Caston in left. Brown retired the side in order.

Top of seventh: Sasa grounded out to short. Steve Ketter struck out swinging. Haake lined a double over the head of the right fielder. Georgion bounced out to the pitcher. 0 Runs, 1 Hit, 1 LOB.

Bottom of seventh: Brown allowed a lead-off single off the glove of Georgion at first. Brown retired the next two batters before allowing a line drive hit to center. The next batter hit a hard grounder that was headed toward right field but it struck the runner moving from first to second to end the inning.

Top of eighth: Reese lined a double to left. McNamee lined a single to right, Reese to third. Price grounded into a fielder's choice, third to second, as Reese scored from third. Hudson grounded out to second, Price advanced to second. Caston grounded out to second. 1 Run, 2 Hits, 1 LOB.

Bottom of eighth: David Byard now pitching for Gary. Byard retired the side in order.

Top of ninth: Wallace led off with a home run to left. Sasa struck out. Ketter popped to short. Haake walked. Georgion flied out to center.

Bottom of ninth: Byard allowed a lead off double and walked a batter in the inning before giving up a run-scoring single.
