Gary, Ind.—Jay Pecci drilled a two-run triple to right field with two outs in the seventh inning to break a 2-2 tie as the Gary SouthShore RailCats defeated the Winnipeg Goldeyes 4-2 on Sunday at U. S. Steel Yard before a crowd of 1,632. The RailCats won three of four in the season-opening series.
Pecci's triple capped off a three-run inning and another comeback win for the RailCats, who trailed in all three of their victories in the series. Tanner Townsend began the seventh with a double down the left field line and went to third on David Detienne's sacrifice. After Nate Price grounded to second, Townsend raced in on a wild pitch, just beating the tag by pitcher Randy Rapp on a ball that rolled only a few feet from catcher Luis Alen, to tie the game at 2-2.
Mike Reese drilled a double to left and Eric McNamee walked to set the stage for Pecci's line drive to the right field corner that brought in both runners.
Winnipeg took a 2-0 lead in the first inning when Brent Metheny doubled with one out and Walter Young walked. Chris Latham delivered a double to right to drive in Metheny and move Young to third. Young scored on a wild pitch.
RailCats starting pitcher Jason Shelley did not allow another base runner after the first inning in a six inning stint. He retired the last 15 batters he faced and struck out eight.
The RailCats got on the board in the fifth when Detienne walked, went to second on Price's ground out, took third on an error, and scored on Reese's ground out to short to make it 2-1.
After Gary took the lead, reliever Chad Blackwell (1-0) worked a perfect eighth inning and Tony Cogan came on to pitch the ninth. Cogan retired the first two batters in the inning before yielding a base hit to Young and a walk to Latham, but he got Antoin Gray to ground out to Pecci at short to end the game and notch his second save.
The RailCats remain home at U. S. Steel Yard for a three game set with the Schaumburg Flyers Monday-Wednesday. Monday and Wednesday's games will have special start times of 10:30 a.m. while the Tuesday game will start at 7:00 p.m. Willie Glen will make his second start of the season for Gary on Monday against Japanese right-hander Eiji Yano. Glen worked six and one-third innings on Thursday and allowed just two hits while walking one and striking out nine. Glen was charged with one run after leaving the game in the seventh with a runner at first who eventually scored.
Notes: The Gary bullpen combined for 15 and two-thirds scoreless innings in the series…The RailCats stole 10 bases in the four games…The team that scored first lost all four games in the series…Winnipeg's big-hitting threesome of Jimmy Hurst, Walter Young, and Fehlandt Lentini combined to go 4 for 39 in the series. Lentini did not play on Sunday…The RailCats, who are 3-1, began the 2006 season by going 3-11.
