Edmonton, Alberta—The Gary SouthShore RailCats scored six runs in the first two innings and then held off a late comeback bid by the Edmonton Cracker-Cats to take a 7-5 victory on Saturday night. The win was the RailCats third straight and improved their record to 7-2.
The RailCats took an early lead, scoring three runs in the first inning against Edmonton starter Mike Henry. Eric McNamee and Jay Pecci delivered consecutive singles to start the game and Jermaine Allensworth's sacrifice fly to right brought in McNamee to make it 1-0. One batter later, Jose Yepez walked and then Tanner Townsend singled to center to bring in Pecci. Dave Detienne followed with a single off the glove of the third baseman to drive in Yepez and make it 3-0.
Gary added three more runs in the second inning and knocked Henry out of the game. McNamee singled with one out and went to second on an error. After Pecci grounded out to second moved McNamee to third, Allensworth dropped a bunt single to third as McNamee raced in to score. Steve Haake then ripped a triple over the head of the center fielder to bring in Allensworth, and Yepez followed with a solid single to left to bring in Haake and make it 6-0.
RailCats starter Willie Glen (2-0) kept the Cracker-Cats off the board until the seventh, when Rhett Teller's two-run double made it a 6-2 game. Glen left after six and one-third innings, allowing six hits and two runs with two walks and two strikeouts.
After the RailCats added a single run in the top of the eighth, Steve Obenchain, who recorded the final two outs in the seventh, ran into big problems in the bottom of the inning. He allowed four consecutive hits leading to three runs as Edmonton pulled to within two at 7-5. David Byard replaced Obenchain with the tying run at the plate and no one out and got a pair of ground outs, one on a great play by third baseman Tanner Townsend, before Tony Cogan came in to get a strikeout to end the threat.
Cogan pitched a perfect ninth inning to earn his league-leading fourth save of the year.
The RailCats finished with 16 hits. Steve Haake had a single, double, and triple and had an opportunity to hit for the cycle when he batted in the top of eighth inning, but needing a home run to become the third player in RailCats history to pull off the rare feat, he flied out to left. McNamee and Townsend also added three hits for the RailCats.
Game three of the series will be played on Sunday afternoon at 2:35 p.m. (CDT). Josh Habel (0-2, 6.00) will start for Gary against Edmonton's Chris Kemlo (0-1, 7.94).
Notes: The win improved Willie Glen's record in his three years with the RailCats to 22-8…The RailCats are 15-2 over their last 17 regular season games dating back to 2006…The RailCats, who had committed 10 errors in their last three games, enjoyed their third errorless game of the year…McNamee, Pecci, Allensworth, and Detienne have hit in eight of the RailCats nine games.
