Gary, Ind.—Outfielder Nathan Haynes, who spent the first half of the 2006 season with the Gary SouthShore RailCats, was promoted to the major leagues on Monday by the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.
Haynes becomes the second player in the RailCats' six year history to reach the major leagues after playing in Gary. Left-handed pitcher Tim Byrdak became the first former RailCat to get to the majors in 2005 when he was called up to the Baltimore Orioles.
Haynes was the RailCats opening night left fielder in 2006 and played in 31 games with the 'Cats, batting .263 with five home runs, 17 runs batted in, and eight stolen bases. His contract was sold to the Angels on June 23, 2006.
Haynes appeared in Monday night's game for the Angels and had a base hit in his first major league at bat.
This season, Haynes had been with the Angels' Triple-A affiliate at Salt Lake, batting .391 in 43 games. He was leading the Pacific Coast League in batting average.
The RailCats, who are off to their best start in team history with an 8-3 record, play at Calgary at 8:05 p.m. (CDT). The RailCats are in first place in the Northern League's South Division, three games ahead of Joliet.
The RailCats return home on Friday after completing a seven game Canadian road trip. For tickets, call (219) 882-BALL.
